About the Musicians

Hsia-Jung Chang

Hsia-Jung Chang, piano

Taiwan native Hsia-Jung Chang grew up listening to the rehearsals and performances of her singer-guitarist mother, Ho Lan, in musical repertoire ranging from Taiwanese folk songs, to flamenco, to her own Chopin transcriptions.

Chang has premiered and commissioned numerous works by composers in the United States and Scandinavia. She has been featured soloist on KUHT television, KAMU radio, Danish National radio, Taiwan radio and TV. Chang’s Chopin: Complete Préludes album, recorded on a rebuilt 1907 Pleyel piano, has been showcased on Reflections from the Keyboard with David Dubal on WQXR; the CBC radio program As It Happens; WJFF radio interview, and other radio stations. Chang’s experimental album, Inside the Piano: 21st Century Improvisations, makes use of the piano in unconventional ways, producing sublime as well as harrowing soundscapes using the strings and resonating surfaces inside the piano. This innovative recording was featured in an hour-long interview as part of the New York Alive series on WKCR, and is a favorite of experimental music DJs across the U.S. Her recordings of Chopin’s Études Op. 10 and Op. 25, and of Debussy, have also received favorable reviews.  All of Chang’s recordings are available through CD Baby and iTunes.

Chang received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Houston and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music, where her dissertation: Beethoven Piano Sonatas: Are they String Quartets in Disguise? received the honor of being selected for publication with UMI.  Chang’s piano teachers include Mary Toy, Nelita True, Ruth Tomfohrde, Abbey Simon, and Constance Keene.

Chang has been guest lecturer/performer at the Manhattan School of Music, Duke University, Friends University, the Shengyang Music Conservatory, and Dong Bei University of China.  She can be heard regularly on the Piano Lunch Series in New York Ctiy.

We welcome Hsia-Jung Chang to her fourth appearance on the Historical Piano Concerts Series.
