n.b.  In 1846, Liszt’s first choice of piano in Vienna was usually a Streicher. Ravel’s own piano was an Erard, and Erard was the chief concert piano in Paris for about a century.
The photo on YouTube accompanying the Liszt sonata, however, is actually of the 1877 Erard played by Amira Acre in her September 20, 2015 concert.

Dmitry Rachmanov and Cullan Bryant, each long-time artists on our series, recorded a two-volume CD for Naxos in 2011 titled Beethoven and His Teachers, recorded by Christopher Greenleaf. Naxos has released one of the pieces, Beethoven's Grosse Fuge, Op. 134, on YouTube. Originally composed as the final movement of his String Quartet No. 13 (Op. 130), Op. 134 is Beethoven's own transcription of the fugue to Piano Four-Hands.
