Stephen Porter

In the past season, pianist Stephen Porter
has given two acclaimed New York recitals, and his playing is called “a
powerful revelation” by New York Arts, “as if the voice of the composer
were speaking to us.” He has had the great pleasure of performing
regularly at the Frederick Collection since 2002 (the present concert
is his eleventh appearance on the series) and the press has praised his
recitals on historical instruments. His Schubert performances
have been described as “compelling and moving” (Berkshire Review),
“superb” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch) and “pure magic...disturbingly
beautiful” (Early Music America). In the acclaimed new biography,
Beethoven: Anguish and Triumph, author Jan Swafford calls Mr. Porter’s
performance of the Appassionata on a Frederick Collection instrument
“unforgettable.”
Stephen Porter’s international solo appearances include performances at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, the Sala Villa-Lobos
at the University of Rio de Janeiro, Albert Long Hall in Istanbul, the
LSO St. Luke’s concert hall in London with the Amadeus Orchestra, the
Rockefeller Foundation at Lake Como, and in Sarajevo as the featured
soloist of the Bosnia International Music Festival.
