Pianist Chaojun Yang has distinguished herself from other young pianists by pursuing a broader, more academic-oriented, multidisciplinary musical career, focused on cross-cultural communications rather than on piano competitions. She has performed in her native Shanghai, as well as in Hong Kong, Taiwan, France, Australia, Croatia, Britain, the Philippines, North Korea, Poland, Canada, Italy, Germany, and the USA. She has appeared in important cultural venues and events worldwide: the Sydney Opera House, Braunschweig Classix Festival in Germany, Pianofest in the Hamptons, Chopin House in Poland, Taos Chamber Music Festival, Haikou Great Hall of the People, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai Concert Hall, and Detroit Symphony Hall—where her performance of Beethoven’s “Waldstein” Sonata aired on classical radio station WRCJ. As concerto soloist she has appeared with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, The Orchestra Now, the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Eastman Philharmonia. Her extensive repertoire spans from pre-Baroque compositions to premieres of 21st century works.
At just six years old, Chaojun was selected to be China’s youngest artist ambassador, visiting Paris with the mayor of Shanghai, where she performed for an audience from 88 countries at the invitation of the Bureau International des Expositions. She was subsequently invited to tour Australia, performing in Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne. Throughout her career, she has been invited to perform in honor of Shanghai’s "sister city" relationship with Gdansk Poland, playing works by both Chinese composers and Frédéric Chopin. She has also performed in North Korea as a cultural ambassador, demonstrating the ability of music to transcend differences, and promoting classical music. Chaojun’s role as pianist and cultural ambassador has earned her commendations from the Shanghai Municipal Committee of Government.
Chaojun earned her BM and BA degrees from Bard College, majoring in Piano Performance and French Studies, and her Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School, where she received the merit-based full-tuition scholarship studying with Professor Hung-Kuan Chen. Currently she is pursuing Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School of Music with Professor Douglas Humpherys. Chaojun has taught piano at renowned institutions including Eastman School of Music, the Juilliard School, and City College Academy of the Arts as a teaching assistant and fellow. She has run her own teaching studio for twenty years with students from diverse background across North America, Asia, and Europe.
